Perhaps someone on this forum knows the answer to this (I think the administrators are MIA with the new edition!) I'm a bit confused with the +1 fire modifier for flank and rear in conjunction with the enfilade. I can see that only fire from flank is enfilade, but does that mean it also gets the +1 as well as the +4? And in that case shouldn't it just be +1 against rear, +5 (total) from flank?
I'm also trying to determine when a unit is considered fighting in a woods. Is it the same as cover (50%)? I have a rifle skirmish line with 50% of its stands in the woods (meaning in cover for fire) being attacked by four French battalions in column. The Rifles may tough it out rather than evade, but at least one of the French columns is contacting the part of the skirmish line not in the woods. Does it make sense to not give that column the -3 for fighting in woods? Clearly the rifles, as a single unit, will have to take the -1 for woods regardless.
Regarding the flank/enfilade, I think I have figured that out. Fire from the flank would be any fire from the flank aspect (50% of firing unit behind the front line) whereas enfilade requires the centre line of the firing unit to pass through the flank. I think the part that was confusing me, and wasn't looking right on the table, was that I was reading the rule to allow enfilade fire for any centre line of fire that passed through the enemy unit's flank, but have revised that to say that the firing unit needs to be on the flank aspect of the target to get enfilade. This didn't seem to be stated all that clearly in the rules, although seems obvious to me now.
Both rules have been tidied up in Over the Hills, Second Edition. There is just a minus now for being shot in flank or rear and flanks and rears are defined in the rules. As for cover basically more of the unit in than out = all in cover and players agree before game what terrain grants cover
Thanks Ady. Sadly I just bought these rules so won’t be seeing the tidied up version anytime soon! But good to know that’s been dealt with in the new version - I’m pretty happy with my house rule interpretation. I played a division level solo game last week and loved the rule dynamics at play - slowly sorting things out so that they make sense to me...
