Just want to get an understanding of the effect of a skirmishing unit in front of columns of Infantry when faced by artillery fire. In the rules it says units block line of sight does that also include troops in skirmish order when being shot at over short range by artillery? Seems a bit strange if it does, I can imagine at short range where the skirmishers are taking pot shots at the artillery they would be targeted but is it realistic when half way across the board? How do people play this situation?
had another thought on this and think actually advancing in open order until within short range may be more realistic. light guys could then form skirmish where they can actually shoot someone and the guys behind can form attach columns to charge in if required. Sounds like a plan for the next game on Tuesday. I'll post how it went on and what we decided.
The open order troops at the front worked well although the following troops would have been better in attack columns as when the cavalry turned up I struggled to form squares which let to us finding some gaps in the rules needing clarifying if you can Adrian.
Whats the cost of the formation change from open order to skirmish order?
Whats the cost of going from skirmish order or open order into square as an formation change?
